Abel Mejia passed away on Sept 16th at his home in Watsonville.
Mr. Mejia graduated Watsonville High School in 1988, and from UCSC with a bachelor's degree in Economics and master's in Education. Over the course of a 23 year long career, Mr. Mejia taught at several Watsonville schools, and was most notably a history and economics teacher at Watsonville High School.
He was the long time president of Association of Mexican American Educators, active member of the Pajaro Valley Federation of Teachers, and long time faculty member dedicated to the WHS club, Mexican Americans Taking Action. Mr. Mejia was extremely active in the Watsonville community, consistently advocating for workers' rights and improvements in the local education system.
Mr. Mejia enjoyed discussing politics, sports, and current events, as well as staying connected to his friends and family over social media. He could often be found singing karaoke and dining out with friends. Mr. Mejia was a generous uncle and brother.
Mr. Mejia was preceded in death by his siblings: Estella, Roberto, Ruben, and David Mejia.
He is survived by his siblings Jose, Fidel, Evangelina, Javier, Ismael, Sylvia, Luis, Sergio, and Angel, and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
A public viewing will be held on 10/7/2020 and 10/8/2020 from 2-9pm at Ave Maria Memorial Chapel. A private burial will be held for Mr. Mejia’s family.
