Leon Crumpton, affectionately known as “Papa” to his grandchildren and as “The Legend” to many others, passed away on March 23, 2024. He was born in Lubbock Texas in 1937 to his loving parents Robert AC and Beatrice Crumpton.
Leon is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, and best friend, Joyce Crumpton (née White), and their cherished children, Lorrie Estrada (Danie l) and April Fort. He leaves behind a legacy through his grandchildren, Clara Scarbrough (James), Richard Estrada (Yadi), Buddy Lovell (Wendy), Alexis Estrada (Diego), Heather Fort (Sam), and Kyle Fort (Gianna), as well as his great-grandchildren, Seth and Emmy. Leon also leaves behind many chosen children and grandchildren, and his sister Freona. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Doris, Robert, Lonnie, and Mickey.
Leon completed his education at Watsonville High School and furthered his studies at Hartnell College before being drafted into the US military, where he served as a Military Police officer. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career with the Watsonville Police Department, dedicating 28 years to serving and protecting the community. As both an officer and detective, he was committed to training and mentoring new officers, fostering in them a deep appreciation for community, respect, and a good sense of humor in their duties. After retiring from the police force, Leon worked as an electrician, collaborating with his brother Robert until he retired again.
Through the years he had many hobbies and interests including: Marksmanship competitions, hunting, fishing, camping, and travel with Joyce.
He will be remembered for his honor, integrity, “Crumpton” work ethic, and his unending patience and love. Those who knew him will never forget his sharp wit, practical jokes, snappy comebacks, and all-around good-natured sense of humor.
Though his time on earth has passed, his story continues through everyone who knew him. He will always be remembered, always be loved, and his legacy will forever inspire us all.
Funeral services will take place April 26th, 10AM at Ave Maria Memorial Chapel in Watsonville, then a brief graveside farewell at Pajaro Valley Memorial Park on Hecker Pass, followed by a reception at the Corralitos Padres Hall at 35 Browns Valley Road in Corralitos.
