Mark Allen Young

Long-time Aptos resident, Mark Allen Young, age 61, passed away unexpectedly on May 23, 2024, in Aptos. Mark was born in O’Connor Hospital in San Jose, CA, and relocated with his family to their custom-built home in the Aptos Hills in the ‘60s. Mark attended all the Aptos schools and graduated from Aptos High School in 1980 where he was a standout athlete and scholar: he was awarded the Bank of America Junior Achievement Award for Liberal Arts, is one of the all-time leading pass receivers the school’s football history, exceptional infielder on the baseball team. Additionally, Mark was an outstanding golfer.

Although Mark preferred to build beautiful furniture, after high school and some college, he went on to become a painting contractor, and thereafter, acquired his general contractor’s license. Eventually he started “Monterey Bay Building and Design, Inc.” in the late 1980’s. Mark was a talented craftsman and remodeled many homes in Santa Cruz County. Along with his former wife, Carrie, another Aptos local, he built his own Victorian-style home in the mid-1990’s, just up the street from where he grew up.

Mark was a devoted Raiders fan and San Francisco Giants fan, passing on his love for both teams to his children, Madison and Colten, as well as his stepchildren Carly and Tosh Ackerman. Although they were not able to have the kind of relationship with their dad that they had wished, Mark was very proud of his children.

In addition to Madison and Colten, Mark is survived by his son, Aaron Larsen (Jessy), of Silverton, OR, who was adopted at birth in April 1980 and who he met for the first time in December 2022; his brother, Gregory Young (John Black) of Palm Springs; and his sister, Jennifer Serraino and her children, Julia and Matthew of Santa Clarita.

He is also survived by his Uncle Jeff (Leslie), cousins Jarron (Dina) and Leanne (Raymond) Young, Kit DaPont, his “Aunt” Pat Rodriguez, his “cousins,” John (Tamarah) Rodriguez and their children, Lisa and Richard Brooks and their children, Lee Ann Rodriguez-Martinez and her children, and Robert (Colleen ) Rodriguez and their children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Beverly Young, as well as his godfather, Rich Rodriguez, and his Uncles Richard and Bradford DaPont.

Mark also leaves behind life-long and devoted friends through good times and bad: Steve Bunner, Scott Ramsey, Pete Gfroerer, Tracy Mitchell Enzweiler (Sandy), the Harris Family, and many more friends in the Aptos Community.
